I am pretty new to java, and im mainly doing this for experience and learning. I would like to join a java game, with nice people to work with. It would be great if it wasnt too long in devolopment, but the basics and tone are set.

You can try on project hosting pages, like codeplex or (for Java specifically) java-gaming.org. Search on those sites for a project suitable for you.
