I'm following this very helpful tutorial to get text rendering. I've even fancied it up by caching all of my fonts to a single bitmap. Fun stuff.

However, this tutorial assumes that text is going to be rendered directly to screen space. What if I want to do something like a billboard?

A billboard is pretty straightforward with a single image, but I'm not sure how to achieve this with text. How do I space my character quads properly in world-space so that they end up the proper size and spacing (e.g., advance, bearing, etc.) in screen-space, while still achieving billboard-like behavior? Would a better approach be to render each line of text to a single image, and then render that? If so, would there be a performance hit for doing that? And what would be a viable approach?
