I have more and more "hipoly" characters in my scene now.

One way to solve this "more or less beautiful" is making a farplane and adding some fog. But the performance still is quite bad.

Isnt there another way except the farplane?

We have LOD, but i cant afford to put multiple models LOD-Levels for every single character. Then we have the clipping after a certain distance. But doesnt it look strange if a character "appears out of nowhere"`?

Is there any other way to solve performance issues? Maybe with a fancy camera effect shader or something? Like Tesselation or something?
