I am working on a project within which I have a 3d grid-aligned world. On the 'faces' connecting grid cells (whether XY, XZ, or YZ plane), there is the possibility for an occluder (wall/floor/etc.) to exist

Given this knowledge, it seems rather feasible to have an occlusion system around it: Given camera location X1,Y1,Z1, and data structure with wall/floor information, can an item in grid cell X2,Y2,Z2 be seen?

Are you aware of any papers/algorithms/solutions to a problem like this?

  • \$\begingroup\$ Generally if you're looking for existing, published algorithms and resources, a search engine is a better bet. Try searching for existing games/systems that use 3D grids and how they handle culling to find some examples, eg. Minecraft. Where StackExchange is best equipped to help is after you've done your initial reading and are working on implementing one of the solutions you found or an original one based on your research & planning, and need human help filling in the gaps or solving problems along the way. \$\endgroup\$ – DMGregory Jun 17 '18 at 12:11
