Using DirectX9 within Visual Studio 2012 in Windows 8? Besides trying to force DX9 to work, I would say just start with DX11. |

How Does Ultima 7 manage different floors in 2d If objects other than the player move (eg doors can open and close by NPC!), then you always have to check each time the character moves if the next desired position is allowed. From the standpoint of pathfinding, (when you double click a destination, or try to pick up an item that is inside a closed area or unreachable) you can determine the reachability by attempting to make a path to it. |

Is game development a no money field? +1 for rational, sane advice. "Game tax" is sometimes also in the form of long hours for regular wages. |

AAA quality game UI kit Well, Google is likely the best anyone can do. The "50.." link should give you a nice starting point for creating your own elts. If you look through the "Tutorial.." link, it's also got other tutorials on the site. |

WinAPI SwapBuffers and Threads Why would you memory map a texture? Unless you're talking about megatextures, you want to get the texture off disk and into GPU memory asap. |
