Web developer by trade, but at night I'm just another hobbyist game developer working on tightening up the graphics in Level 3.

comment Texture antialiasing?
Just keep in mind that there is an SMAA method demonstrated that uses a depth buffer to give a greater bias towards geometric edges. Basically you don't want to use that. Determine edges with chroma/luma instead.

Okay, so you want to apply a linear force.

I assume you mean to make the object controllable by the player?

You should edit your question so that your statement is easier to understand, then. I don't know if you are making a distinction between X and Z values, and X and Z axes.

When you change the X or Z (and leave Y at 50m for now) does the sphere no longer respond to gravity?

comment XNA and C# Draw method question
Personally I have found it easier to not implement DrawableGameComponent for every single drawable object and instead just used it for rendering systems that hold a list of the objects and operate at a broader scope. Drawing the objects is more explicit and you have more control over their drawing order.

comment Is there a technique to creating a “black hole” background in XNA?
I think the case can be made for a parallax background if you're viewing the black hole from its side. It is like being on a body of water with a big whirlpool in the distance, so you will see a lot of constant sideways moving in one direction.

Setting tight near and far plane boundaries will also greatly help your shadow mapping quality, should you choose to use shadow mapping in the future.

Okay, I see now. You're really not needing to differentiate the biomes to every single tile of the map. Also, the article's proposed concept does seem tailor-made to the author but some parts can be picked off. I'm editing my answer to make it more clear.
