comment How easy is Unity for the self-trained Java Programmer compared to other engines?
John, you don't need any C to use Unity and will puck C# quickly because of your background on Java, like Savlon said. I think it's the easiest way to jump from Java apps to cross-platform games.

comment How to create a new GameObject, without adding it to the scene?
I'm afraid you can't. I think you'll have to delay the instantiation of your class.

comment Is ArrayLists so slow that it is doomed to kill performance in Unity?
They are so slow and old that they are not supported anymore for newer platforms, so you won't find them if you try to compile your game to Windows Phone or Windows Store Apps.

@Lautaro You shouldn't manipulate RigidBody.velocity but you can achieve what Jason said by calculating the position (see my post). But since you are modeling a propelled vehicle, maybe AddForce is really what you want (so you can have the inertia effect).

We need to know more about your other application. It's possible to either convert the game view into video or use it directly in your application, but we need more detail.

comment How to keep two objects in the same zone when they collide?
@Grey Yes, I think you are right, Grey, that's probably better for him since he probably wants to keep using the rigid bodies to simulate physics in the rest of his application.

I know the answer but cannot answer because someone didn't understand you and put your question on hold :P You have to not use the rigid body physics, use the collider as a trigger, write a script to stop and put the spheres where you want when the collider is activated.

Nice! I wonder if they would do it if it wasn't for Valve.
