Student (computer science)

I'm programming games in my free time.

After creating a Pong clone using OpenGL, I decided to take a bigger step and write a game that actually interests me. Which means I'll take several smaller steps before.

I'm currently writing a small tech demo to teach myself skeletal animation. Debug rendering the bones as lines works, now Ionly need to find out what's going wrong with my blender script. Probably exporting bones in the wrong space...

comment How are boss battles important?
I recently played Deus Ex: Human Revolution and imho, the boss fights, while fitting the story, clashed with the game mechanics (fighting in a stealth game). At least you can bring a turret... youtube.com/watch?v=L_NyIRodE8I

Have you tried using values other than 1.0f for the third parameter? Have you tried animating the parameter over time?

Wouldn't the people mentioned in the previous comment get a place in the credits?

comment GUI layouts in games?
This answer could be improved by adding pictures (e.g. showing how the example dialog is made up of different elements). Also, the paragraphs might make more sense in a different order.

comment Why does clipping take place after illumination?
opengl-tutorial.org/beginners-tutorials/tutorial-3-matrices nicely visualises the effect the perspective matrix has on the geometry. Clipped, only the objects inside the frustum cube would remain (see images at roughly the middle of the article).

Ridged multifractals, as explained in the libnoise tutorial which is linked in the answer.

comment How significant is the addition of multiplayer to a singleplayer game compared to starting with multiplayer in mind?
You could write the singleplayer as one man multiplayer, e.g. so that the client starts a server running on the players computer and connects to that when a singleplayer game is started. Even then, the networking required is non trivial.

comment Convert OpenGL code to DirectX
Do you need to know the exact coordinate or only whether and which object was clicked on? The later could be solved in screenspace by rendering all objects with different colors, then reading back the color from the pixel at the position of the mouse cursor. Ofc, that would require another render pass and unprojecting might be faster...

comment Spaceship interiors: How to approach, implementation-wise?
As long as airlocks and other openings line up between inside and outside and between rooms, you can make interiors from as many different meshes as you like. Might as well make the player able to customize the interior and exterior by building the ship from different tiles/part (this would have the side effect of making asset creation easier, most parts could be reused for different ships). Just need to make sure the interior doesn't penetrate the exterior. Slightly related: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/47917/…

comment Why do meshes show up as bones in the Model class?
In blender, an armature is a collection of bones (sometimes also called skeleton).

comment Detect Car Wheel Position?
Doing a hough transform with circles should give you all circles in the image, then you only have to find the right circles. Of course, you'd still need to extract the outline first.

comment Why do most video game guns reload without losing unused ammo in the magazine?
Day of Defeat source was quite realistic on the M1 Garand: you could only reload after firing all ten shots.

comment Is there a game not using meshes for models?
Slightly related: 'sfera' does realtime pathtracing and uses only spheres, see e.g.: youtube.com/watch?v=Dh9uWYaiP3s . For something with more complex geometry, see 'brigade engine', e.g. youtube.com/watch?v=n0vHdMmp2_c

comment How to create a projection matrix in OpenGL ES 2.0
Looking at opengl.org/sdk/docs/man2/xhtml/gluPerspective.xml , the denominator of result[3][2] should be (zNear - zFar). Also, your frustum does not look like opengl.org/sdk/docs/man2/xhtml/glFrustum.xml
