comment Is chess-like AI really inapplicable in turn-based strategy games?
What about Alpha-Beta Prunning? It is better version of min-max.

You may experiment with Collaborative Diffusion. It works by diffusiong value into grid, enemies then hill-climb the grid. It works at least for pathfinding. If You made more values to diffuse (separately?) and more sophisticated hill-climb (select where to go next based on several values) ...

Ask experienced players or watch some proplayers talking about patterns. From my experience these patterns are simple circles, bouncing (remember Pong?), squares, zigzags or spirals.

I don't know about software but it might be possible to record some other SHMUP and make some statistics about movement of enemies. There exist programs which can find moving parts of image, and also programs which find function by which they move.

(offtopic) What about using Python? It may get You more productive, You can prototype it faster.

comment What to consider when deciding on 2D vs 3D for a game?
There are problems with guessing jumps in 3D in general (for me it is solved in Prince Of Persia by allowing jumping only from ledge).

comment Where do I start if I want to independently learn game graphic design?
I recommend You can think about user interfaces in games. You know, good old Windows's user interface - button, windows, listbox, combobox - has means for triggering actions or displaying information (...), so there is some equivalent in games. Nature of games is that they are more interactive, they have much more need for feedback. It is important to have feedback in games ("you took 2 coins ... 30 are left to new weapon bonus", "you were killed by i_am_mmonster_12354 with machine gun").

comment Textual descriptions of 8-bit and 16-bit game engines
As @Kylotan pointed out. Engine is Input, Processing, Output. Processing was some hacked up physics. Input was polling or whatever hardware allowed; Output the same. That is not interesting, but what is extremely interesting is how they managed to make it so small&efficient, that is what I value about it. You may be interested in making Allegro game in 20 lines, it contains many hacks to make code small; thought some of them are C language related, some - like how they use arrays ... - are worth knowing I think.

Search for skeletal animation, they solve similar problem of propagating transformations.

Have You tried pushing Your physics into Box2D (or similar)? Let it simulate few frames and You should have prediction :).

Some games use Python for scripting. I heard Unreal is going to use Python, not sure if it is true, though.

comment How does Half Life's covering work?
On the other had You can mean, that every cover is precomputed and they just select from it. But I do not think they would insert cover places directly into code ...
