comment How can I easily implement swinging in a platformer game?
What about simple pendulum for rope + some animations which apear ropeish? I do not believe that old games like Bionic Commando had something else than pendulum.

Perhaps even tech support might help?

You might get into problem known as tunneling.

comment What would be the best way to find an open space in a level?
Just simple "Off the map" and "in the wall" test ara trivial if You have some way to tell if position You test is "off the map" and "wall". Perhaps Your problem is more complex?

comment Movement prediction for non-shooters
Do You do this position+=velocity*deltatime for each entity in parallel (imperatively: in code You have 2 arrays of physical parameters of entities, one frame apart, You update the older one to be newer and swap them)? There are some problems with iterating by Sean Barret, who made base of Thief 1 engine.

Quake engine has prediction since first version. Quake prediction is described there and on some other places. Check it out.

comment How to make a tile vanish after player steps on it, in a tilebased game?
@Martin true, I found quite interesting article on Turing from Steve Yegge. This hiding/abstracting of machine language makes programmers more productive, but ML is still there.

comment Is chess-like AI really inapplicable in turn-based strategy games?
Hint: I would google "prolog chess" for examples of chess logic. All following links are already recommended there: Perhaps Killzone AI might be interesting for You, they use collaborative diffusion and it looks very elegant.

comment Any fixed-point portable open-source 3D physics engines?
@kaoD Some more about fixed point physics I found by googling. I was wondering if such stuff is possible in Bullet and it seems some guys tried it. I believe Bullet is good, so this is natural to search for it there ... Contact them or google more for (ODE fixed point, bullet physics fixed point, ...)
