Game developer with a strong background in ActionScript 3 and Flash. I'm branching out these days into Android development as a primary focus, and secondarily into C.

comment How to render 2D particles as fluid?
I can vouch for this approach. I used it once in a project and it worked beautifully. Add a bevel filter and you can have a nice meniscus on your blobs as well.

comment Developing an Asteroids successor: which languages/tools/frameworks?
@soc You do not need to buy any adobe package to create swf files or write actionscript. Flex compiler : free. FlashDevelop : free. This is all you need. As for multiplayer over a lan, I haven't done that variety of multiplayer before. I've used Flash Media Server to act as a thin server that refereed between two clients before, but there are other options for servers that are free. You have me curious now...

comment Price for Unity on Android and iPhone?
Note: That's just the basic version of Unity. There are a number of other really helpful features that you'll really want that are only available in pro. The Profiler comes to mind immediately. In that case you're looking at $4000, not $800.

One other thing to consider is how the tooling is for each. I know that when you're talking about Unity there's a sweet built in profiler that is ONLY available in Pro (meaning you'd be paying $4000 instead of 800). Does Mono* offer the same type of tooling for the $800 you'd pay for unity "basic"?

comment Unity or MonoTouch with XNATouch/MonoGame? same price
They could, but let's put it this way: When they were making a big deal about forbidding applications generated by the Adobe iOS Flash packager they were simultaneously accepting and allowing Unity apps in spite of the "letter of the law" forbidding Unity as well. If you want to be 'safe' then you simply stick with Objective C. Otherwise, it's really a matter of which entity or framework they decide to make an example of. Maybe it will be the one you want to use, maybe not. That's the price you pay for entry into their 'game'.
