comment Spherical harmonics lighting - what does it accomplish?
Well, that depends what you compare it to. If you compare it to an analytic model, it's more involved and expensive. But the analytic model does not take the local environment in account. These days though I mostly see people using cube maps. They achieve similar results and have better hardware support.

comment Why should I write a computer program if I don't know exactly how the program gets run in its entirety?
Btw, API is just the first turtle. Then it's standard library, system calls, kernel, drivers, microcode... Turtles all the way down.

AWS is a really good option too, but it's a different kind of service (IaaS vs. PaaS). You don't get the elastic scaling that you get with GAE. Also, just because they bill in an unusual fashion, it does not mean that it will be expensive. Do the math. See here for an example of it working out: gamesfromwithin.com/… Obviously, not everyone's situation is the same, and different needs require different solutions. PS: the article you linked to is pre-HRD. Things have gotten a LOT better.

comment Is C++ necessary to learn if I ever want to get a job in the game industry?
If you are a professional developer, you can't always pick and choose your tools. For example, I hate Java and MATLAB with a passion. However, once in a while I just have to hold my breath and get it over with. So, just quit your whining and learn C++. Learn a few more languages too while you're at it.

Using events/messages, as is common in GUI applications.

Are there any options for clients besides the official (and illegal) RO ones? I'd love a simple, open source (M)MOG stack.

@CaiusEugene: I think you are over-thinking your distance determination. I added a very cheap, very basic algorithm to the reply at point 3a that should get you started.

I'm sorry, I don't understand your problem. Why do you feel occlusion on the ground plane is incorrect? It looks fairly decent.
