Thanks Marton. I'm actually defining a simple markup language not unlike JSON but with more structure like a XML elements with attributes. Example: pastebin.com/URpm792v I'm not sure if anything already exists, but this is what I want to have to type instead of JSON or XML. XML being too verbose, and JSON being too free-form. Some sort of schema implementation might be needed too.

You make many good points on why this is just a silly idea! Maybe I was just having too much fun with .NET. I don't know if I should just use XML or look for a much more readable text data format.

For this question though, he's specifically saying he wants to make a WoW clone.

The second half about servers, manpower and the likes should be enough to scare off anyone, let alone the amount of "stuff" in the game.

Nothing beats the old hard coded multi-coloured triangles as placeholders :P

The core idea of the game I want to make is a space combat sim controlled not unlike Freelancer. I figure the best way to get started is to work on this "space flight" aspect first then go from there.

comment C++ game-programming; What would be the “next step”?
Mucking around in a console environment is the best way to start programming C++ IMO.

I think there's one fundamental flaw in your argument. "Massively" multiplayer...

comment What are your favourite game-specific coding gems?
Well to be honest, Pythagorean math is used ALL over game code, especially engines, such as physics code, rendering code, AI.

In fact, this is a really good way to learn about scripting and data-driven development. Create the "engine" for this and write the rest in scripts.
