For an increased performance, you can precalculate leftMatches, rightMatches, missingTopOrBottomStone for every possible combination on the row / column. The required bits for storing the calculations would be columns * 3 * (2 ^ columns). 2 ^ columns are possibilities, and columns * 3 are the bits required for all 3 calculations.

How does that work with the update system on Android? If I change something in the database, then update the app on the store, does the user get that update?

They may be useful in other parts of the game, but this question was specifically talking about pathfinding.

That's what I have done already, but still the score is strange. For example, I get the same F score for every node.
