I'm the author of the Apress book Learn iPhone and iPad Cocos2D Game Development.

"if you only have a few in the team who want to go old school, won't everyone suffer?" -- Are you saying TDD is old-school? If not I'm not understanding the sentence.

comment Why the shareware (not demo) model died?
The shareware model was very successful for good games and software. But there was a huge influx of terrible games and software which gave shareware a bad name. The idea is still in use today but we don't call it that way anymore, and it has transformed from "one episode free" to microtransations and PDLC.

comment Tilemap-based level editor wishlist
Plug-In Editors rule. Besides what you said, if a plugin is broken, you can just disable it instead of having the Editor crash or do other unwanted stuff.

Just a tip: check out the existing Tilemap editors. Tiled, Mappy and a few others. Something they all have is something you're very likely going to need in your own editor.

comment What tools do you use for 2D art/sprite creation?
I vote on Pro-Motion. I'm not an artist but those I worked with 10 years ago swear by it. It has a steep learning curve but it's the closest you get (and actually surpasses) the good old DPaint.
