If you take the 3d plane for your cell and the line for that south pole, and find the intersection point, then you could use LookAt for that point. You would also want to handle the case where the plane is parallel to that line.

You should use the 'pixels' member of SDL_surface to get the raw data. see wiki.libsdl.org/… . I can't find any reference on .contents that you are using :|

0.5x and 0.5z in the first case, to move forward? After rotation of 45degrees, a translation of (0, 0, 0.5) should give you the same effect. It will cause translation along the rotated z axis.

I'm not sure that I understand. Whatever translation vector that you choose, will get applied after the rotation.
