comment How can I provide attribute extensibility in a component-based entity system?
You asked: What do you use / would propose as an approach for a data-driven ECS in terms of attribute storage/handling? This is what I'm using. Sorry if my answer is long winded. I'm still figuring this out. Short answer: I would move the properties from your component class to the entity class. Lookup of properties is not that expensive. I would not keep copies of variables in code. Fetch them from the store, modify them and write them back. You need to avoid allocation and copying of keys and values. Hash key strings into constants. Hope this helps.

Which Python version are you using? The wikipedia version uses the range function which will create a list with all elements in Python version 2.7.x and below. In Python 3+ range returns an iterator function only creating one element during iterator. Your code uses xrange instead, a function only available in Python 2. Try running both in python 3.

comment How should I organize Lua scripts so that some entities do not have access to functions they shouldn't?
Why do you want to do this? Are you creating a multiplayer game and need to prohibit players from cheating? If not, why bother?

comment Mismatch of Entity System and Savegames
If your remove any data which is only temporarily valid from your entities, there will be no mismatch. The entities should not contain any runtime dependent data (e.g. the window property). It should contain all the necessary data to recreate the runtime state. I don't know your system well enough to explain it any further. Sorry.
