I started with the font size set at 12. The font size actually doesn't seem to make a difference for reasons I can't understand, but that's another issue entirely...

I've used an imported font, setting the size to 64, and I still see similar artifacts. I'll add a bit to the main question.

I didn't post it, but the same kind of artifacts appear with outline disabled. The alpha is 1. How does one increase the font quality?

The picture is a screenshot of my web browser when loading my build. The game window should be centered in my browser, not off to the left. I've looked at the CSS file, but I can't figure out what if anything I could tweak to have the desired effect. I've also looked at the player settings.
