@bobobobo I agree with you to a certain extent. However, since there is still an imbalance in the ratio of females in positions of power within the games industry, I would say it does have an affect. Also, I wonder if having a male protagonist is merely a habit more than anything else, left over from a patriarchal society. Things are much more equal now, but perhaps it is more that both genders have an expectation of male characters, rather than truly indicitive of the demographic?

while you are correct, and it is good for people to know about Dual Contouring, it is certainly not a good fit for this specific project. Sharp edges are not needed and DC produces a lot more vertices and faces than MC, and is also harder to implement.

@kurtzbot I take your point. However, I think there is a big difference between, say Lara Croft, and Ellen Ripley. Ripley is a great example of a believably strong female. She shows great inner strength, high intellect, passion, courage, physical strength, and aggression, but never once did I think she was acting like a man. And they didn't need to make her an ugly, butch, short-haired lesbian to do it. But all too often, people make strong females by simply making them 'act like a man'. Lara Croft IS a sexy, big-bosomed woman acting like a man, for the purpose of appealing to young men.

@DanielExcinsky If you look here: opengl.org/sdk/docs/man/xhtml/glTexParameter.xml you can find some mipmap level controls: GL_TEXTURE_MIN_LOD, GL_TEXTURE_MAX_LOD, GL_TEXTURE_MAX_LEVEL, GL_TEXTURE_LOD_BIAS, etc. Maybe playing around with those could help too

@DanielExcinsky No, what you are doing is shifting the whole tile by half a texel to the right and down, which will make things worse as the lower right edge with intrude more into adjacent tile. It really should be done in the generation of the UVs: minuv += halftexel; maxuv -= halftexel (for each quad). But anyway, you still might get problems with mipmapping (see my comment above)

The standard way of generating mipmaps is to average 4 texels for each subsequent layer. The problem with atlases is that the tiles begin to bleed into each other at lower levels. That might be what's causing it. You may have to pad your tiles, modify the UVs like I suggested, or write your own mipmap generation routine to take the atlas into account.

You could try somethign like this to fake it: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/17567/…

Try pulling the atlas coordinates in by half a texel each way, see if that helps. If you don't understand what I mean, I can elaborate (sorry to sound condescending, I don't know your experience).

Yes, can you tell us about the geometry. It is 1 or a few big squares with repeating textures, or is each square we see a separate square? Can you show us the exact texture you use. At first glance it looks like your mipmap generation might be screwed. But it's hard to tell.

@ISJTrigger Thanks for the interesting info. Small criticism however, I don't think you can use Samus as an example of a successful female protagonist, due to the secrecy of her gender. Also, there is a case to be made that Lara only became famous because she is sexy and acts like a male (at least in the beginning). We all know that sexy women will sell games, but not so much for realistic multidimensional ones.
