@MooseBoys I'm also not really sure how line-drawing algorithms are an appropriate substitute for ray-tracing anyhow. I'm still going to need to look at every point along the line to see if there's something there, aren't I?

Actually, the game will track individual NPC ships. What might work is to enable those NPCs to make decisions, then just assume that a hundred thousand other guys made more or less the same decision and do part of the simulation that way.

That does sound like a pretty good plan. Ultimately, I suppose what I really want is a system that approximates reality well enough that strategies that work in real life work in the simulation. Perhaps the best thing to do is just try things until I hit upon something that feels right.
