I like both solutions. The solution to first approach sounds simple and that is what I initially had in mind, except that I didn't know that I can pass an array of predefined size to Shader. I thought I'm stuck with vec2/3/4 and mat2/3/4 data structures. Is there an example of passing an array to the shader? Regarding the second approach, I'd never think of using w*h buffer and NEAREST filtering to mask the tile. Just awesome.
