Great answer! Much appreciated. I'm fascinated by the idea of having level-specific sprite sheets. I imagine doing this sort of optimization when version one or the beta of a game is close to shipping and it's clear which assets go with which levels.

+1. Thanks for the info! I like the idea of using a single array and storing the rows in blocks/chunks. Also the idea of "down-sizing" the grid by adjusting a boundary instead of adjusting the size is cool!

+1 Thanks for the response. If I have an NSArray *myArray that contains instances of NSArray will doing [myArray copy] suffice? I'm not sure of the deep vs shallow copy issues.

@Ken there's a few bugs here and there like occasionally a disc will stick over an existing disc. Also the collisions seem too generous so it's difficult to get into smaller spaces. I can just fix these of course. However I wanted to see if there's a better general approach.

@StevenStadnicki Yes elaborate on the hex grid storage approach please. I was thinking about using a 2D array where the even-indexed rows are understood to be staggered to the right (and the entry in the n-1st column is nil or ignored). However I'm not sure if this is the easiest way.
