comment Characteristics, what's the inverse of (x*(x+1))/2?
you should probably use * for multiplication denotation, because your solving of the quadratic formula is a little confusing if you aren't familiar with the quadratic formula... it looks like you've got a variable in your solution (2 x charac)

comment How do you set up PhysFS for use in a game?
at what point are you getting a missing DLL? building the PhysFS binaries or building your project? I got a missing libgmp-10.dll error with cmake and had to add it to my windows PATH because I think the default installation has it not add its directory to the PATH variable... in my case I added: C:\Program Files (x86)\CMake 2.8\bin

comment (int) Math.floor(x / TILESIZE) or just (int) (x / TILESIZE)
Casting a float with (int) in java truncates everything after the decimal. It's not actually rounding, it just gets rid of anything but the integer.

comment Deleting a game object causing an access violation
Whatever you do, you don't want to iterate over all your objects looking for ones marked dead. You could store a seperate std::vector or std::list of objects to be deleted which some sort of object manager could process.

comment pointers to member functions in an event dispatcher
It looks like a combination of std::function and std::bind can get me the desired functionality... I didn't think such things were in the standard library. Can you elaborate on how you use a free function?
