As for a simple game, try to make the classic space shooter, then something like chess, a platformer. Limit yourself to 2 weeks of development, don't get stuck on developing the same game for too long. This will not only introduce you to various genres and their deifferent techniques, but teach you the basics of game design and game development. And all those concepts can be applied to 3D development.

@guest0021 I've been in your place. Since you're just beginning, take it slowly one step at a time. First start by making a simple 2D games, try to get sprites (graphic images) to fly around. Then make a 2D game with images from web (like a rocket, spaceship, etc.) Keep track of score, lives. Add sound. Add particle system for destruction. Also, I would personally say use a framework like MonoGame to make the game. While its easier to make fancy games with UDK/Unity, you get to learn a lot more thhings when you do it manually. Trust me, that hard work goes a long way. If not, use Unity3D

comment Is it possible to be a game artist and not work on character/creature animation?
I have a friend who is an "environmental artist", his team makes models for objects like TV, carton boxes, and what not. However, human modeling and animation is equally important. Being a versatile artist opens more job, and generally gives the artist a better understanding of different techniques.
