Consider the games you've played. How many of them have options to use DirectX or OpenGL? That's how many create wrappers for the two libraries to be able to support either one. You have a limited imagination. :-P

I would guess (and I'm most interested in) Blender for modeling. The game engine went stagnant for a significant period of time and is just being renovated, last I checked; I never had much faith in it.

The .ms3d format is an easy one to implement too, for those of you that want to write your own model importer/exporter. You can find the C header file definition of the format online.
