comment Can I name a team with the name of their city to avoid trademark issues?
EA had their own line of "Street" type games released under their EA Sports BIG label: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EA_Sports_BIG Some good inspiration!

comment Resolving bounding box collision detection
Apologies for not being clear in that comment: It would be better to step in one direction, resolve any collisions, and then repeat on the other direction. Determining which axis to step first is dependent on the game rules/state.

comment Resolving bounding box collision detection
Resolve the collision one-axis at a time: Detect-Resolve X-Detect again. You want to make sure you are resolving the correct axis first, so that you get your desired result (i.e. if your Y velocity > X velocity, resolve the Y axis first). That isn't really the best way to go about it, but it "works".

comment Should I use XNA or Unity to build a video game?
+1 for lighting. Since it seems that's a core mechanic and not trivial to implement.
