this isn't a how to get started...i've started and built a few games already and i've already had experience with rails. this is for asking the experienced answer. heck it's more answerable than gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/60329/… which seems to have plenty of votes, eh?

Yeah, i figured from the background image provided they would be looking for very simple paths. That's why even in what I showed I only ever moved in x or y and not both at the same time. Even stepping it up to both at the same time, you'd want to make sure you moved a certain ratio

an alternative option would be to have it fire a burst shot sometimes, so that it will at least be firing one of the shots closer to you
