I'm a Master's student at DePaul University, studying Computer Science with an emphasis in Game Development. I'm currently studying the id tech engines, starting with Doom and working my way through up to Doom 3.

Efficient existing rating system for multiplayer? Isn't a form of ELO used in the StarCraft 2 rating system? Actually, researching how SC2 ranks millions of players would probably be a good route to take. |

Confusing Callbacks Install the June 2010 DirectX SDK, and go to the Samples/C++/Direct3D10/Tutorials/ and look at Tutorials 8-14. These are designed to teach DXUT, but they were taken out of the corresponding Direct3D11 folder for some reason. That's the best I think you can do anymore since MSDN was stripped. |

Alternatives to Component Based Architecture? I've seen you say things like this in your Digipen videos before Sean - excellent advice. Architectures are a means to an end, and that end is a game. |

Game Clock Precision ah, now I get what he's saying. The precision for numbers from 2^32 to 2^33 is the same, so we have the same precision for 2^32 seconds. thanks for the different perspective. |

Is it worthwhile investing time learning Unreal Script when UDK 4 will be replacing it with C++? there are always going to be new systems and programming languages. All that matters is that you are able to make an end product (game, engine, or whatever). |

Good resources for learning about game architecture? This site is down, but the page, along with the 380 page thesis that Plummer wrote, is available through archive.org. It's easy to read and very informative for a beginner! |

What was game development on the Apple II like? The intro to Michael Abrash's Graphics Black Book is written by John Carmack, and he talks about how easy it was to do graphics - you just did a draw command and it would automatically switch over. From what I remember from playing with it in the 80s, you could make those calls directly through BASIC. |
