I've been programming and playing games in one way or another for almost as long as I can remember, starting with LOGO on my ColecoVision. I got my start in the industry as a tester, where among other things I played the original release of "The Sims" for an absolutely inhuman number of hours.

Professionally, I've written code for Savage, Savage 2 and Heroes of Newerth. Currently I'm doing mostly server work for Kixeye.

While C/C++ is definitely my "home base", I love trying out new languages. My current job has led me to pickup ActionScript and more recently Scala, which has been thoroughly enjoyable. Scala is quickly becoming my go to for random experiments. I've also spent various amounts of time tinkering with BASIC, Pascal, x86 assembler, Lisp, Perl, PHP, Java and of course a few esoterics like Brainfuck, Befunge and Piet.

Yup, ALLEGRO_KEY_UP is the code for the up arrow key, not the event.

Although the code could be arranged a little nicer, what it is doing is conceptually sound. By maintaining the state of the keys (updated via events when they change) each frame can be processed based on the state of the key for that frame and the duration of the frame, providing for the smoothest possible movement. Even though it is using a timed event, it would be good for the code to track the actual frame time to account for small variations and/or long frames. Processing a movement based only off of key events is going to be unreliable, because it will depend on the kry repeat rate.

I guess it wasn't clear from the comment, but it was meant to be in support of your "don't allow it" reply

It looks like you just have some really weird perspective going on. How are you setting up your view and projection matrices?

comment Do game studios hire people based on their math knowledge alone?
This answer pretty much sums it up, but I would add the one caveat that a very large company with a dedicated R&D department or a very specialized company (e.g. Havok) might have use for might have use for a pure mathematician.

If a player has the ability to do something and it can confer any amount of advantage, they will do it. If you reduce it's efficacy to the point that it is not useful, now it is just a useless feature that will confuse less experienced players, who will think that since they have the capacity to do it, it might be useful.

comment Knowledge of a Language vs. Games in Portfolio
I certainly didn't mean to imply that knowing C++ wasn't important for the "big game" section of the industry, but even there the application of very low level knowledge is infrequent and very specialized, i.e. knowing the performance characteristics of a particular console's hardware, which is not something you can typically learn outside of the industry and is also an ever changing target.

It sounds like the first step is identifying exactly what functionality you want your framework to provide. Is it like a full game engine, or just the piece that facilitates communication between the different games? Interesting concept by the way, I like the idea.
