I am Kyle Roucis (pronounced Rooshis). I am an avid programmer, gamer, and game designer with specialization in iPhone programming. Over the years I have developed my own particle engine, physics engine, rendering engine, game engine, 3D math library, iPhone games, and many other side projects.

My interests include creating unique games, programming on the iPhone, table top and video games, camping and hiking, and paintball.

I am currently a student at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs working on my Bachelor’s of Innovation in Computer Science and Game Design & Development.

Half-way through the summer! I am currently working as a programming intern at Freeverse in Brooklyn, NY. It’s been an absolutely amazing experience and I’m learning a ton! Stick around for more info as things progress this summer.

comment How should I display ping in a client-server-client multiplayer?
Indeed it is better to track round trip time instead of timestamping because of syncing issue. Nice catch Yuri.

Wow. I feel incredibly stupid. So, it turns out the renderInterface() line is important: I set the scene to orthographic, draw my interface elements, and then return to perspective. But here's the kicker: I was using default values instead of the current camera's perspective. Thanks for the help guys!

Matrix slots? As in Projection and Modelview? I think so, but obviously I've got something wrong here. My modelview matrix calculations are based on the gluLookAt page. The resulting matrix looks something like M = (s[0] s[1] s[2] 0 u[0] u[1] u[2] 0 -f[0] -f[1] -f[2] 0 p.x p.y p.z 1) where s=side u=up and f=forward and p=position. Once that is built, it is inverted and then glMultMatrix'd onto the identity Modelview. If necessary, I can do a full psuedocode dump as an edit.

Translation/rotation order shouldn't be an issue if I am using a single matrix for my transform, should it? I thought matrices were used to solve that issue. Additionally, the camera seems to move and rotate correctly, except for the frustum. Is it possible that translation/rotation order doesn't effect modelview but effects the projection matrix? That seems very strange to me. I'm uncertain how to answer your comment, because the camera can be moved and/or rotated at any time and it's modelview matrix is calculated each frame.

comment Need Ideas for Game
@notabene — The idea is to get used to the steps of game development by recreating classic titles. This approach lets one understand how all of the components come together to create a game and get a feel of the flow. If the OP is comfortable with these things, then they should move on to meatier fare, such as creating their own simple game.

Now, see, that is a much better question! THAT is something the game dev community should be able to help you with. That question is open enough that it encourages you to work for a real answer with guidance from the community.

True enough. I simply felt that keeping the site more oriented towards solving development issues over asking others for game ideas was important to me. Certainly, if anyone is willing to answer your question with game ideas, that is up to them.

I've considered doing something like this a few times, but every time I've come to the same conclusion: this is not the place for this kind of a request. If you have a technical question, this is the place to go to solve those pesky bugs. But free handouts of game ideas is not the intended purpose of this Stack Exchange. Anyone is welcome to challenge this allegation, but I believe that you should remove this 'request'.

Well, there you go. To sum up once again: send a packet from Server to Client and track it's round trip time. Average over some finite interval, and there you have it. Client to Client time is unimportant but can be approximated by summing Client pings.

I believe it is called 'dilation', a description of which can be found on Wikipedia[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dilation_(morphology)]. Nice catch
