comment Unity 2D: Lighting ground tiles in a sidescroller?
You can tint sprites using SpriteRenderer.color. But since its multiplicative, you cannot get a brighter color than you have. It MIGHT work for you if you're lucky,

comment Why is C# method not showing up for button's On Click()
Here's how I think of it: You onClick could trigger any number of MainMenu.PlayLevel methods attached to any number of objects in the scene. So you have to select the object first, and then the method so that it calls the CORRECT PlayLevel.

Good. - You have the canvas and the canvas has the main menu script. In the OnCLick, select the canvas Object from the scene. Then select the Function Dropdown - you should see the "MainMenu" there and be able to select PlayLevel in a submenu for "MainMenu".

You need to have that script attached to a game object that is in the scene. Add the main menu as a component to a gameobject in your scene. Maybe the canvas for the button is a good choice. Then that MainMenu should be selectable by choosing the right object and script in the SCENE tab of the object selection screen.

comment Unity3D Tag as a public variable in editor
I understand better. Is there some other Type you could get instead of GameObject? For example if they are Ships, then public Ship fooShip. Then you could get the gameobject or components of that ship as needed from the reference. And it would only take objects of the appropriate type.

Since you can change the tag at runtime, why worry about the editor? Just set an enum you can set in the editor and then set the tag approrpiately when your object enables. Would that work?

At risk of asking the obvious: are you adding comments that begin with /// <summary> /// /// </summary>
