comment Depth interpolation for z-buffer, with scanline
Re: "And of course I add to the zBuffer, if current z is closer to the viewer than the previous value at that index." Its not clear to me that you worded that how you meant to but wanted to make sure that what you meant was "if current z is closer to the viewer than the previous z at that index THEN write the color to the color buffer AND write the new z to the z buffer" The z buffer's purpose is to block color writes if a color at that pixel was already written closer to the camera eye.

comment Is finding graph minors without single node pinch points possible?
Yes the example is as such but its a very simplified example for the purposes of this question. In actual fact the related project has overlapping areas along the vertical axis. I was thinking about a solution that didnt involve spacial knowledge only connectivity.

"I'm assuming that you have a planar embedding of your graph and can determine the circumference" Not necessarily if I am understanding what you mean. If by circumference you mean identifying all out outer edge nodes and by planar embedding you mean a 2d only version of the graph where overlapping heights are extrapolated out into a separate area of the 2d graph then no. But your answer does give me some ideas to think about in terms of identifying such things.

Check out unity. Its a very developer friendly engine that is free to use and experiment with and it has some side scroller samples. www.unity3d.com

comment A* pathfinding algorithm to identify entrances into current “room”?
Excellent info. Thanks for the tips. While our levels are quite static they also dont really have consistently sized "doorways." So the grid approach could have limited use. But there might be crossbreed approach we could think about. Either way its looking like having precomputed or manually placed portals is going to be the best bet.
