Use this tag if you're having questions or problems while developing a Platform game of your own. This tag does not refer to games about gaming platforms, such as Hyperdimension Neptunia.
A Platform game, also known as a Platformer game or Platformer, is one where level traversal and platform jumping comprise something beyond the arena of the gameplay. These platforming puzzles may be present in all kinds of genres, but in the Platform game they represent a core and omnipresent challenge of the stages. The player character may be limitted to movement abilities, or may wield an impressive arsenal of different weapon types, but in all scenarios remains endangered by the surrounding environment and gravity.
Platform games can be 2D or 3D. They comprise a very prominent portion of the 2D action genre, but in 3D they represent a much smaller portion due to the greater variety of possible action focus points (most commonly combat and shooting).
In the early years of video games, Platform games represented one of the most popular and prevalent genres in the console market. The most symbolic and well-known games of this genre tend to be the Super Mario Bros. series and the Mega Man series. Some of the more unique platformers include games such as Shadows of the Colossus and Umihara Kawase.
