Microtransactions are often used in games to provide a revenue source for the developers, as opposed to the traditional method of charging an upfront cost for full access to all the game's content. While microtransactions are a staple of the mobile app market, they are also available on traditional computer platforms such as Valve Corporation's Steam platform.
