Masking is a digital image processing term simialar in concept to bitmasking. An image mask is applyed by pixel-by-pixel to other image and behaves like a sieve to color values. The mask pixel value of 255 (for unsigned 8-bit mask) will result in original image color, the value of 0 - background color (or transparency). Intermediate values result can vary and depends on particular masking algorithm used. Same mask can be applyed to all color channells or different mask can be applied to different color channels.
