I would like to start developing my own shaders within unity.

For starters I would like to do a screen spaced blur.

Are there any good tutorials to learn shader development besides the official unity documentation, which i find a bit hard to understand?

This question appears to be off-topic. The users who voted to close gave this specific reason:

  • "Questions about "how to get started," "what to learn next," or "which technology to use" are discussion-oriented questions which involve answers that are either based on opinion, or which are all equally valid. probably better to ask on answers.unity3d.com it's like Game Development but just for unity. – David Young Mar 15 '11 at 23:06

@David the signal/noise ratio on Unity Answers has gotten pretty bad. Here's probably a better resource: forum.unity3d.com/forums/16-ShaderLab – Tetrad Mar 16 '11 at 4:53

Jessy did a complete set of Unity iOS Shader tutorials: youtube.com/user/JessyUV#grid/user/31F6A116DCCC9F61 – Tiago Costa Mar 17 '11 at 1:42

I think this is what you are looking for: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cg_Programming/Unity. The tutorials are organized in an increasing difficulty order and each was written with Unity in mind.
