Should there be a specific link between the characters height as well as the tile size for the tile maps? That is if a tile is 32x32 does that mean that a character sprite has to be the same size? Also does the size of tiles I use have any great impact on the game itself?

Your characters do not have to be the same size as the tiles, but you need to keep in mind that they need to align on the same axis. For example, if you make your sprite 64x64 then you need to align them between two tiles rather than one. It's all about how you want to design your tile system.

  • Bigger allows you to map faster, but you lose the luxury of flexibility.
  • Sprites being the same size as your tile grid makes it easier to program. You don't have to worry about your sprite being mutilated by tiles that render above your character.

The size of tiles is mostly based on preference of what you want the game to feel like. It doesn't really matter what size you use, it is all your preference and vision. This will also affect your tools and code.

I understand most of your answer but one part is slightly unclear, the size will affect my game internally how so really. It will render slower with smaller tile sizes than bigger ones? –  kabuto178 Sep 28 '13 at 17:19
The way in which you operate it. For example, it will affect how you use your tools and code. It has no external effect, only internal. I updated the bottom of my answer to make it more clear. –  Helladen Sep 28 '13 at 17:59
Understood, thanks for the answer I was beginning to wonder if I had to start over or not. –  kabuto178 Sep 28 '13 at 19:27
Tile size will affect your performance - smaller tiles don't batch nearly as quickly and will result in more draw calls being sent to the GPU. Be weary. –  Vaughan Hilts Sep 29 '13 at 3:01
This answer is not fully correct. Especially seeing the tag AndEngine, you must understand that every tile is simply a sprite rendered at position [tileCol * tileWidth, tileRow * tileHeight]. All sprites are positioned using floats, they do not move from tile to tile (unless you make them so). So you can easily have a character that moves between tiles of arbitrary size or a character that is bigger than a tile. –  sm4 Oct 22 '13 at 8:19
