+1 As I've personally read an entire feature in Game Developer magazine answering this particular question, I think it's a reasonable question to ask. –  jcurrie33 Dec 2 '10 at 9:32

-1 and vote to close as dup because even if it's not too general, we already have plenty of questions about specific types of middleware (3D, audio, AI, physics) that serve this purpose much better. –  user744 Dec 2 '10 at 10:43

possible duplicate of Available AI middleware –  user744 Dec 2 '10 at 10:43

Here's a random list I just found online: http://www.gamemiddleware.org/middleware

If you're willing to pay $3.95 to access the article, I remember reading a great article featuring reviews on various Middleware, including polling from various industry professionals, in a past issue of Game Developer magazine: http://www.gdmag.com/archive/aug09.htm

Off the top of my head I remember Havok being on the top of the list for physics, as well as Bink for video and Scaleform for UI. Beyond that, I can't remember.

Good luck!
