A friend and I are writing a topdown RPG called NecroMonster. In the game when you defeat an enemy you can take its shape (basically morph into it) and we dont know how to make this look right.
First idea we had was to have it get sucked up into the sky in a light beam and returned in monster form as this is relatively easy to imlpement, remove on 2D character, insert beam of light and then replace with a monster character. This however seemed too 'godly' and didn't fit our theme, then we though maybe make it flash back and fourth, again - simple but seems too much like Pokemon evolution.
What techniques can I use to make a morph animation between several 2D sprite sets that are relatively simple and will look the part. It cant be too complex and graphical becuase its is a 2D RPG (written in python) and there is the possibility of numerous transformations (so the less complex the better.) Is there a technique I can use to go from Human A to Monster B to Monster C and back to Human A?
