I've looked at a couple other questions about Sprites but most seem to apply to Isometric or RPG related sprites. So I'm wondering if there is a decent place for 2D side scrolling plat-former type sprites?

Well are there any commercial games in the public domain? Like donated 16 bit stuff from the days of the original famicom (nes) – Terrance Nov 16 '10 at 21:40… Potential duplicate? – The Communist Duck Nov 17 '10 at 18:07
I'm asking about a specific type of 2d game. "2d platformer". Because I took a look at that answer and did not find many of the necessary resources. – Terrance Nov 17 '10 at 18:19
I agree with Terrance, it is really difficult to find free 2D tiles and sprites for platformers. I'm working on a 2D engine in HTML5 and so far I'm using the awesome (but not usable) Amiga Turrican tiles for testing purposes. – UVL Jan 1 '11 at 10:44
Policy change, these kinds of questions are now off topic. There are other resources that are better suited to these kinds of issues. – Tetrad Jan 21 '12 at 20:22

You can try the free sprites from hasgraphics. They can be used in commercial and non-commercial projects.

Where can I find free sprites and images? is probably your best bet for finding resources.

yeah that was what I was looking at... for the most part I didn't find that many 2d platformer type resources... – Terrance Nov 16 '10 at 21:34

Try the pokemon clones.

There is massive community dedicated to recreating the pokemon games from scratch and creating brand new games(new world/ diffrent badges).

A lot of people there create sprites (mainly pokemon based), some will help you and in rare occasions I have seen requests.

All they ask is the rightful credit for there work.

As of now I've decided to prototype with some of the stuff from here. Yes I know their rips from commercial games but I don't plan on distribution of any kind with those sprites.
