Game Development Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional and independent game developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I know C++ but I don't know an API looking at Directx. I can't find any good tutorials and really need some help to start 2D game development. I'm doing an game development focused Art course that will get me into programming.

My goal is make my own 2D engine, make 2D games like FTL/hotline-mami using C++ and directx. world can you help me link me with some tutorials or something!?

OH and if it helps I know CSS, XHTML, HTML 5 thanks to some courses I have done.

If you haven't done any graphics/game programming earlier, maybe it would be easier starting with something like SDL or SFML instead of "raw" DirectX? –  EClaesson Feb 8 '13 at 7:27

"Getting started" questions are considered off topic on this site. Have you googled around and come across GamesFromScratch and GPWiki? Another result that came up and looked good was directxtutorial.com. There are also plenty of books on the API, look around. –  michael.bartnett Feb 8 '13 at 8:41

If you are a beginner, I will not recommend directly learning DirectX because it is very difficult for a beginner to learn. And if you are going to learning with 2D games, I would recommend cocos2d-x http://www.cocos2d-x.org/. It is a cross-platform 2D game engine.
