So I am currently developing a game. I had no big problems creating the basic game mechanics, included some mesh objects and it's working fine. But the surrounding is empty. Black. Is there a proven method that helps you create a suitable background mesh and/or image that enhances your game? Is there a proven method to find suitable sounds and background music that do the same?

What sort of perspective? Side-scroller? Top view? 3d first person? – tyjkenn Feb 2 at 6:30
you see it from the top but you can zoom in and circle around it. In how far is that important? – Zurechtweiser Feb 2 at 8:15
I'm pretty sure there's no objective method of choosing your game's aesthetic, so I have to vote to close this question. – Kylotan Feb 2 at 16:41
If it's top-view, how do you see the background? Are there holes in the ground? – tyjkenn Feb 2 at 19:00
It's top view but a bit tilted. So you can zoom out and see more of the surrounding. What you won't see though is the sky. – Zurechtweiser Feb 3 at 9:17

I'm not completely understanding what you're asking, but it seems to me like this is a very art related question. This means that there is no 'best' method.

My advice is to just look at how other games do it and try to mimic them.
