MY name is Lennon, I am an artist and am very interested in making a rpg game for the iphone, i was wondering what the process would be, tools i should use, and a price check on everything i might need?

my game idea is an rpg, where you are taken through a pretty simple and linear story, where your choices have alot of affect in what happens.

the fighting is turn based.

there would be a ton of spells and attacks, which is what the game would be mostly about. its less about getting the good spell at level 10, but when getting to level 10, choosing between 20 different good spells to customize your guy.

im all about creating a super unique character to the player.

many unique weapons as well and cute items to wear.

as the player gets further through the game, he will unlock ''party slots'' which are simply more room in his party for more players, up to 3. the thing with this would be you have to know someone who plays the app, and can send them a request for their avatar to join your party.

this would promote alot of fun getting to interact with your friends characters. your friends characters that are in your party would be updated in real time as your friend levels up his own character in his game, you would be simply controlling your friends avatar, though you are technicaly taking him on a different adventure.

there would be something called ''death mountain'' or something, that would be a super intense collosium like part of the game, where players who believe their unique character build and attacks are powerfull enough to take on the strongest monsters in the game, in a row. this would be mulitplayer, and would require at least one friend, to play with you real time as you both attempt to survive all the fights. unlike the adventure mode, your friend would control his own character, and is a much closer and more exlusive experiance for those who are both good at the game, and have friends who play it.

pvp for your team vs other teams would also be in it.

is this possible? how can i begin to tackle this? need alot of advice, people wanna help out i dont mind, im really excited about it tho! hit me up, thank you everyone!

namaste :)

It is possible, but most certainly not feasible for a first-time project. The system you describe takes A LOT of work to make. – Qqwy Jan 29 at 19:59
If he could find an already experienced programmer(s), I'd guess it would become more within his range. More costly, sure, but it's the fastest way. – Mutoh Jan 29 at 20:02

It's definitely possible but this isn't exactly the place to get started in game making really. It's more of a resource or help website for much more specific things than you're asking. – Tony Jan 29 at 20:03
To put the amount of work in perspective. Angry Birds took an entire company months to make using existing tools and libraries like Box2D; your game is much much much more complicated (especially with the PVP feature). – XiaoChuan Yu Jan 29 at 20:03

You can start here: http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/ You can use this tool to model your game ideas into a playable single player demo. If you can do that, maybe people will help implement your game if they like your art and story.

Some more generic tools here: http://www.pixelprospector.com/the-big-list-of-game-making-tools/

Some tools supposedly don't require programming knowledge(see RPGmaker). If you have millions of dollars, you could possibly buy a game company or hire a lot of professionals to get started on your game idea.

If you are not a millionaire and wish to solo this project, I suggest downloading one of the tools there that do not require a lot of programming knowledge. Get started on making a simple game(maybe the first room in your game idea) with no multiplayer, pvp and no leveling up. Work on creating one aspect of the game, be it fighting one monster or talking to one npc. You are not likely to succeed in making a huge game project solo with no budget. Making a game is no different than martial arts(in this sense). You need to be the martials arts equivalent of a UFC heavy weight champion to do half the things you mentioned in your game description. If you never made a game before(never been to a fist fight), you are better off hitting a punching bag and watching some tutorials online, making things that are very basic. All that "working on" your game idea will get you is at best discouraged, at worst depressed. Start microscopically small and work on getting to the level where you can get a good ranking in Ludum Dare compos.
