Game Development Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional and independent game developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I was thinking how nice it would be to have a website where you can play chess and it's variants with others around the world but I don't know how much it would cost to develop or where to begin.

I would like to do it cheap, but I don't want to get ripped off. I don't know if outsourcing sites like getacoder or freelancer would produce the desired result but they are cheaper and I would like an estimate for this that uses outsourced work.

It would be browser based, and allow people to sign up and play at least one or maybe a half-dozen chess variants with others by challenging players that are online and play in real time. It would be 2-D and simple enough for older computers and smart-phones.

As an example, there is a version of chess that has a third "kngiht" which can move diagonally. This should be fairly simple to code, but other variants will have different boards and pieces and rules. I would like an estimate that allows for at least one variant such as this in addition to standard chess.

It would also include a modest subscription system that allowed extra features and would allow further development.

So how much would this cost and what would be involved/needed to make this and make it good with minimal investment? (PHP, Javascript, Flash, etc.?)

This isn't a question that can be reasonably answered in it's current form. Depending on your exact requirements (gameplay wise, technology hosting wise, target platforms, art quality, etc.) as well as the team or outsourcing house you choose the costs could vary dramatically. – Tetrad Jan 18 at 23:10
