Is there a tool or a plugin for GIMP that allows me to automatically create an explosion of a sprite? I am not talking about some fire effects, I want the actual image to explode into smaller pieces and have an frame-by-frame animation for that or a gif.

Is there such a tool and if not, how would you do it manually?

It didn't take long to find it: imagesplitter.net – Markus von Broady Nov 5 '12 at 8:50
Not really what I want. – NoneOfYourBusiness Nov 14 '12 at 7:33
It's a tool that explodes a spritesheet into many images - single frames. Exactly what you described. – Markus von Broady Nov 14 '12 at 7:51
Yeah but first of all it is online. I can't upload contracted art. Second, it only does it in squares and it does not explode them. That is the key of the question. Exploding a sprite. – NoneOfYourBusiness Nov 14 '12 at 16:22
I can't know you don't want an online tool, unless you say so :) Also, I found a similar question: gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/34055/… – Markus von Broady Nov 15 '12 at 15:31
