I am a newbie a video game design, but I have made one video game called Evan Aris Program. It was made with Game maker which is a do-it-easy kinda of program, but it still took lots of effort and spriting skills. I wanted to try making mmo next and I have some questions:

  1. What is the best program(s) or method for designing a MMO? Is Abyssal Engine a good choice if I want to make a 2d MMO?
  2. What are some really good and clear ways to make absolutely sure that resources in use are legal to use.
  3. What are some good places to get websites and ways to advertise the game.
  4. Do I necessary need patents to sell the game or is it already legally covered?
  5. What servers might be the best choice to get and which types of servers will cost the least money?
  6. What are other important things I might need to know about?

This is too many questions and most of them are too broad to be reasonably answered here. Based on the questions you're asking, you may want to do a bit more research and get a bit more experience before taking on a larger project. – Byte56 Aug 6 '12 at 23:53

-1, too vague, leads to a discussion, etc... Read the FAQ before posting, please, you violated many of the sections. There are literary hundreds of platforms and frameworks that work just fine, but I recommend Node.js. – Yannbane Aug 6 '12 at 23:55

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

I'll answer this one only:

What are other important things I might need to know about?

You need to know that it's hard to develop an MMO. Start with something smaller.

-1 because, in my experience, trying to make an MMO is a great way to learn a lot of cool stuff. Sure, it was barely playable and all, but if you don't set your goals high you aren't going to improve. – Yannbane Aug 7 '12 at 0:04
It's unlikely the OP is asking about something on such a large scale as the "it's hard" question. Additionally, this is hardly an answer to the question (since it can't be answered reasonably), but it would make a good comment. – Byte56 Aug 7 '12 at 0:08
Fair enough, just wanted to make that clear. The transition Game Maker -> MMO might just kill his motivation, and my opinion is still that he should start with something smaller. Maybe a multiplayer game, that's already one big step forward. If it's not on a large scale, it is not an **M**MO. – Laurent Couvidou Aug 7 '12 at 0:12
