Game Development Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional and independent game developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am working on preliminary requirements for a large scale implementation of a gaming environment.

Total end user population is 300k users worldwide. Concurrent usage should support at minimum 5k concurrent users.

User will access both individual games and have access to a virtual world via desktop and/or mobile device.

What is the best server set-up to support this population.

What kind of game? Slow paced with only a few messages (think "online Tic Tac Toe") or fast paced (think "first person shooter")? Also how dynamic of a world? Fixed and unchanging, or constantly changing (think "Minecraft")? – Tim Holt Jun 14 '12 at 16:05

There are a tonne of parameters you need to provide to even make a rough estimate. I believe that you'll have to get those basics, and maybe even hire some professionals to do it, as this is not a thing you'd like to gamble with. – Yannbane Jun 14 '12 at 16:10

I think you also need to clarify what you're asking. "Best server setup" seems subjective. Do you mean how many physical servers you need? Are you asking about load-sharing or geographical dispersion, perhaps? "server setup" could include all of these. – Wackidev Jun 14 '12 at 16:37
