I'm completely new to the world of 3D and have set myself a challenge of creating a golf course environment, which with the help of UDK will allow a character to walk around the terrain (course) in an 'exploration' mode.

My question is, what would generally be considered the best way to create the golf course terrain. Would I simply paint it in using the built in UDK terrain editor - and then carve out bunkers/water etc. Or should I use something like photoshop to create a 2D map then import that into UDK?

It's very new so sorry if this seems an easy question. There just seems to be a hundred ways to do things.

Many thanks.

I'm not a golf guy, but are you talking regular golf or mini-golf? I don't recall seeing bunkers and water (except the lakes) on huge terrains. – Nick Apr 18 '12 at 15:08
Regular golf in this case. – Rob Apr 18 '12 at 15:28
There kind of are a hundred ways to do it. So really you should pick one that works for you, then is you have a question about implementing it, ask a specific question. At the moment you're asking for opinions, which isn't really what this site is about. – Byte56 Apr 18 '12 at 15:41
