Game Development Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional and independent game developers. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Is there a book or Website concerning the history of console-style RPGs like Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy etc., similar to the series on The History of Computer Role-Playing Games by Matt Barton or his book Dungeons & Desktops?

I would like to broaden my view of this style of game and maybe try some definitive classics of the genre I have not heard of before.

I think you might be slightly pushing the edge of gamedev, though I hope you find your answer. You may want to try the gaming stackexchange? – The Communist Duck Aug 11 '10 at 9:46

As this doesn't directly relate to the creation of games. It is off topic, may I suggest. gaming.stackexchange.com – Noctrine Aug 11 '10 at 11:10
Sorry, it seemed like a fine question to me. – ischeriad Aug 11 '10 at 12:36
It's no problem. – Noctrine Aug 11 '10 at 13:26
Not sure, but it would seem to me that such a book is mostly interesting to game designers, the general public (even RPG fans) would mostly see it as a novelty. The book would likely mention what worked in what RPG and for what reason - makes it relevant in my book. – Kaj Aug 12 '10 at 19:30
