I played ZZT way back in the day. It was a very simple ANSI character based game that came with a built-in editor that easily allowed users to make their own intricate and complicated "adventure" games. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZZT

Are there any similar game systems / platforms around today?

Nothing in particular, I just want to know if ZZT or similar are still around in any form. i.e., is there a very simple role playing / puzzle game development platform or framework, preferably with very low memory and processor requirement? Is there such a thing with a community actively creating new games? At one point Total Annihilation featured at least the community component, though I don't think the editor or simplicity were in place – keflavich Dec 18 '11 at 19:02
